What’s the difference between Sportsnet NOW and NHL LIVE?

December 20, 2021

NEW THIS SEASON: a subscription to SN NOW PREMIUM includes NHL LIVE. For more information click here.

Since the launch of Sportsnet NOW, we have had a number of inquiries about the difference between it and NHL LIVE. While both are designed for sports fans and available for a monthly subscription price, they are very different products.

In-market vs. Out-of-market NHL Games

SN NOW STANDARD $14.99/month or $149.99/year

Sportsnet NOW is what is known as an “in-market” NHL product. This is just a fancy way of saying it allows you to watch your local NHL team without blackouts.

Every team in the NHL has a number of games that are designated as regional (only available in a team’s broadcast territory) and national (available to anyone, anywhere across the country).

As Sportsnet is the sole broadcast partner of the Edmonton OilersCalgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks, Sportsnet NOW carries all 82 games of each of those franchises, depending on where you live. Sportsnet is also the home for 56 of 82 Toronto Maple Leafs games; the remaining 26 Leafs games are not on Sportsnet and thus not available in this product.

Note: Sportsnet does not own the regional rights to the Ottawa Senators (55 games), Montreal Canadiens (50 games) or the Winnipeg Jets (60 games). As a result, only their national games are available on Sportsnet NOW (32 Canadiens games, 27 Senators games, 22 Jets games).

SN NOW PREMIUM $34.99/month or $249.99/year

SN NOW PREMIUM allows users to choose how much hockey they would like to watch.

SN NOW STANDARD allows a user to livestream 300+ regular season games, depending on where you live, while SN NOW PREMIUM lifts blackouts for all Sportsnet exclusive games, totaling over 1,000 for the NHL season.

SN NOW PREMIUM also allows users to stream more non-hockey content, such as live WWE pay-per-views, Bundesliga, FA Cup, United Rugby Championship, Super League Rugby, Premiership Rugby, National Rugby League and IndyCar.

NHL LIVE is known as an “out-of-market” NHL product as it allows you to watch games from the rest of the NHL teams that aren’t in your local region. The local team’s games are blacked out in your region within NHL LIVE This means that in total NHL LIVE also allows you to watch over 1,000 NHL hockey games, including all outdoor games, the All-Star Game, games that don’t make it onto Canadian television (US / US team matchups), and the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs. It also allows you to watch the national games of your local team, just not the regional ones.

Using the above information as examples, if you live in Edmonton and want to watch Oilers games, you would be able to watch all 82 of their games (39 national + 43 regional) without blackouts, making Sportsnet NOW the product for you.

If you were living in Winnipeg but wanted to watch the Leafs, NHL LIVE would be the product that best suits your needs, as you are then out-of-market.

Multi-sport vs. Single-sport

Sportsnet NOW

Sportsnet NOW offers multiple sports in a single subscription. Along with over 1,000 total NHL games, Sportsnet NOW is also the destination for the Toronto Blue Jays & MLB, Raptors & NBA, FA Cup, Bundesliga, WWE, Grand Slam of Curling, and much more.

NHL LIVE is just for hockey. It is for the hard-core fan who wants to stream over 1,000 NHL hockey games and/or an out-of-market team while still getting the entire NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
